2020 Master Thesis Project

Modular Prefabricated, Post-Disaster Social Housing for Ecuador.

This master thesis deals with mono-material connection systems with UPB Boards and establish strategies with a parametric design for the construction of social housing. A good design needs to match with the necessities on a society, and this project wants to cover specifically the necessities at my homeland Ecuador.

Ecuador, as a developing country has 283.560 km2 and a density of 62 persons km2. Is a high-risk country under conditions of earthquakes, volcanic activity, floods and forced displacements by paramilitary causes. According to the Risk Management Secretariat of Ecuador, there had been around 271.148 persons to be relocated under the situations mentioned before. Is this situation where the project takes effect.

Currently exist several social housing projects to be builded around the country, but the execution time goes around two to three years, mean while the Ecuadorian Secretariat must provide temporary shelters and assign specific areas to the disaster-stricken population. Construction-time-factor is essential here where in a matter of weeks all displaced people are relocated at completely finished new social housing.

Timber with capabilities for tension and compression forces, insulation properties, and a high strength to weight ratio, makes it possible to design highly complex structures. Weak points on timber structures can be found on the joints, where metallic dowel-type or with connectors where applied due to high rigidity and the decay of the external elements. Therefore, nowadays is interesting to apply ancient technology on wooden connections where there is an exclusivity of wood as a joint material.

This project established strategies with a parametric and algorithmic design, which allows a practical exploration within the design in form, material and structure. The manufacturing process is interlocked with the computational design which in fact simplifies the production performance.
