Ecuadorian Scientific Research Center in Antarctica

Ecuador is an adherent country to the Antarctic Treaty, so it is possible to carry out scientific studies at this site. The project that I developed is the design of a New Ecuadorian Scientific Research Center in Antarctica.

I made a design where the scientific research center can be used for a whole year considering the extreme climate conditions on the site, this project presents a proposal of a cover wrapped with materials super insulations to avoid the loses temperature and it is above the floor level to allow the access although the large snow accumulation.

This project is planned to be in Fort William Point, Greenwich island, Antarctica. It has a budget of USD 4 674 857.70, a capacity of 52 people and an area of 470 square meters.

Reduced but functional internal spaces are designed in which all the necessary activities of its occupants can be carried out. Five modules are proposed which are connected one to each other by a central body, therefore it reduces circulation distances. The structure’s geometric allows the possibility for a future expansion. A self-sustaining infrastructure is presented by using isolated walls, doors, and windows. The project is complemented by wind and solar energy, a desalination plant to obtain consumable water and a good management of liquid and solid waste to avoid environmental pollution.
